How to Clean a DTF Printhead (Safely)

Cleaning recovers most clogged nozzles — but done wrong, it wastes ink and can damage the head. Here’s the measured approach a technician uses.

How to Clean a DTF Printhead (Safely)

Escalate gently — don’t hammer it

  1. Run one normal (not powerful) cleaning cycle, then a nozzle test.
  2. Still missing nozzles? One more cycle, then STOP.
  3. Cap the head and let cleaning solution dwell (a soak) for a while.
  4. Re-test. Soaking clears far more than repeated hard cleans.

Repeated back-to-back power cleans dump expensive ink, heat-stress the head, and rarely help once the first two didn’t. Patience beats brute force.

Service the parts that actually matter

  • Clean the capping station — a dried cap makes cleaning useless
  • Wipe the wiper blade — a dirty wiper re-smears ink
  • Check the damper — a clog here starves the nozzles

Manual cleaning cautions

If you swab the nozzle plate, use lint-free swabs and the correct cleaning solution only, with light strokes along the plate — never scrub or use anything abrasive. When in doubt, soak rather than scrub.

Cleaning not bringing nozzles back? It’s usually a damper or cap — let us confirm.
