Should You Clean or Replace Your DTF Printhead?

A DTF printhead (i3200, XP600, F1080…) is the most expensive part on the machine. Before you buy one, make sure you actually need it — most “bad head” symptoms are recoverable.

Shops replace far more printheads than they need to. A head that’s only clogged — or is being starved by a bad damper or cap — looks identical on a nozzle test to one that’s failing. The trick is ruling out the cheap causes first.

Try cleaning first when…

  • Missing nozzles come and go, or improve after a cleaning.
  • The problem appeared after the printer sat idle.
  • Only one channel (often White) is affected — suspect its damper/cap first.
  • You haven’t yet replaced the damper or serviced the cap station.

Recovery steps: a proper cap-station soak with cleaning solution, a fresh damper, and controlled cleaning cycles (not fifty hard cleans in a row). This brings back a large share of “dead” heads.

Consider replacement when…

  • Nozzles are permanently missing after damper, cap and soak service.
  • You see heavy deflection — lines firing crooked — from physical nozzle-plate damage.
  • There’s a dead straight block of nozzles that never recovers.
  • The head has taken a strike or physical contact.

Protect the new head

If you do replace, fix what killed the old one first — usually a bad cap, worn wiper, or neglected white-ink circulation. Dropping a new head onto a dirty cap station just clogs it too. Replacement also means alignment and calibration to print cleanly.
